We're always being told what we shouldn't eat. The list has gotten so long our meals are spent dodging artery-clogging this and blood-pressure-raising that like a frat boy caught in the middle of a food fight. Are there no good-for-you, tasty, sweet, cancer-fighting foods for the hungry?

Yes, you can still eat. But according to Health magazine, some foods are better than others. Here are five more of your best nutritional bets for keeping the doctor at bay:

Licorice Root
This sweet little devil (it's 50 times sweeter than sugar) contains an ingredient called glycyrrhizin, which may be a weapon against cancer. Glycyrrhizin seems to protect DNA from damage caused by dangerous carcinogens. Mice who drank glycyrrhizin-laced water and were later exposed to carcinogen were far less likely to develop tumors than mice given plain water. You can sample the licorice root in European licorice, but most of the American stuff contains anise, not licorice root.

Green Tea
The leaves of green tea contain polyphenols, antioxidants that have been shown to help in cancer prevention. Research at the National Cancer Institute in Tokyo demonstrated that catechin (the main component of green tea tannin) can significantly lower the incidence of cancer. When sipping your beverage, consider that green tea and catechin have also been shown to inhibit the growth as well as the actual generation of cancer.

This green beauty actually helps to speed toxins out of the digestive system. Artichokes are loaded with folic acid. Studies have shown that the risk of colon cancer is greater in those with low levels of folic acid. If you don't have time to eat a 'choke, then consider rubbing one on your skin. A component in artichokes called silymarin has been found to reduce UVB radiation, which causes skin cancer.

Hot Peppers
People used to think that hot peppers caused ulcers and other assorted ailments. Now researchers realize that the hot stuff in peppers, capsaicin, may extinguish harmful carcinogens before they start trouble. The capsaicin prevents nitrites and amines from forming a lethal marriage. And remember the hotter the pepper, the more capsaicin it contains.

Broccoli and Cabbage
All the cruciferous veggies, including kale, brussels sprouts and cauliflower, hold a treasure chest of cancer fighters. Men who consume a lot of cruciferous vegetables, specifically broccoli and cabbage, may reduce their risk of bladder cancer. These vegetables have ample amounts of brassinin and sulforaphane, which boost the production of enzymes, that defuse potential carcinogens and rid them from the body.
