Mind, Body and Soul Resolutions

Written by Dr. Dan Johnston

Do you want an improved mind, body, or spirit in 2007? Here's how.

What would you like to change about yourself in the New Year?

Before you answer that, consider the three essentials of life: mind, body and spirit. What can you change about the way you take care of your mind, your body and your spiritual needs? Make one resolution for each of these areas.

What does your mind need? Do you need to change an attitude, become more open or less judgmental? Or maybe it's stimulation you crave. Commit to learning something new by reading more challenging books or attending a weekend seminar. Check out what local colleges are offering. Learn to fix your computer or repair your car.

Challenge your mind in the New Year, and your horizons will expand.

Now for your body, do you need to exercise more? Do you need a healthier diet? Maybe you just need to slow down and relax. Learn meditation, yoga or Tai Chi to increase your body's strength and flexibility. Or maybe you should give up a habit that you know is bad for you.

Challenge your body in the New Year, and it will reward you with improved health.

Has your spirit been neglected? Simply acknowledging your spiritual needs by appreciating the beauty of a sunset may be enough. Get out into nature more often; take long strolls; find a labyrinth and walk it. Read inspirational literature and sacred texts. Talk meaningfully to another person. Go to a church or synagogue.

Challenge your old ways in the New Year, and a more spiritual you may emerge.

Consider these tips as you make your three resolutions:

  • Don't be too ambitious or you'll set yourself up to fail. Choose goals that are reasonable and reachable.
  • Look at a resolution as an opportunity to do something exciting and new and not as a task of drudgery.

Increase your motivation by telling others about the resolutions you are making.
