1. Use sunscreen (at least SPF 15) every day and put it on a half-hour before going outside. This will give it time to be absorbed into the skin.
2. Reapply sunscreen often, especially if you perspire or swim.
3. Slather the stuff on. You need to use at least an ounce of sunscreen to cover the exposed skin of an average-size adult in a swimsuit.
4. If you are on medication, ask your doctor or pharmacist about increased sensitivity to sunlight. Antibiotics, for example, increase your skin's sensitivity to sun.
5. The sun is strongest at about 1 p.m. If you plan to be outdoors, use sunscreen at least three hours before and three hours after 1 p.m.
6. Use sunscreen on your hands, ears, throat and chest as well as your face.
7. Use a broad-spectrum sunscreen, which includes both UVA and UVB protection.
8. Reach for sunscreens with zinc oxide and titanium dioxide, both of which are physical rather than chemical sun blocks that resist breaking down in the heat.
9. Sunscreens decompose about a year after opening, so be sure to toss any unused product after that time.
